Developing critical thinking skills and an understanding of science are keys to solving the planet's future problems, including global warming, yet the United States continues to fall behind the rest of the world in the quality of public education. Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim, director of "An Inconvenient Truth," takes on the task of dissecting the public education system in his film "_Waiting For Superman_ (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=Gw+jLZyEATOr4c9ae...) ," opening this Friday in select cities. The film will inspire Americans to take action, and you can help kick off the movement by seeing the film. WORST SUMMER EVER?
The summer of 2010 set temperature records across the country. Our partner _NRDC_ (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=tA8CUTZ67mrh96KGD...) has published an analysis using data from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. Nearly one in three U.S. weather stations recorded average temperatures among their five hottest on record. Even more telling is that nighttime lows were the hottest ever recorded at nearly one in four stations. Nighttime temperatures are more sensitive to the buildup of heat-trapping pollution in the atmosphere. More compelling evidence that things are getting worse. _Click here for the full report_ (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=ueQtYsOjsQcF5hBNC...)

CIRCLE THE DATE: 10/10/10
On 10/10/10, people all around the world will gather in their communities to do something to help deal with global warming. Politicians are invited to come and take notes. Author and activist Bill McKibben and 350.org are organizing a _Global Work Party_ (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=XFgLrpCqXrv+KIDBt...) for the day, with emphasis on both 'work' and 'party'.
