All - Many thanks to Nick, Derek, & Traci for logging miles...we are now in 1st place in WV in points w/Clarksburg & Parkersburg nipping at our back wheels. Just a quick reminder to log your miles today (May 31) for May if you want to be eligible for prizes for this month...prizes? What prizes you ask...check the attached for prize list and see below for point accumulation. Ride on! Christiaan HOW IT WORKS: * All Challenge participants that reside in the United States are automatically entered into the Prize Program. * You accumulate Challenge Points each day you ride. * You become eligible for prizes as soon as you reach the Bronze award level. Prizes improve as you achieve higher levels. * Prizes will be awarded based upon the total number of Challenge points you have accumulated by the end of each month. * To ensure you receive all of your points for the month, all of your rides for each month must be entered by 11:59 pm of the last day of each month. * No more than 1 prize per participant per month * All you need to do is ride and enter your miles! HOW CHALLENGE POINTS WORK: * Challenge Points accumulate based upon miles ridden with an additional 20 bonus points for each day that you ride. Scoring: 1 mile = 1 challenge point 20 bonus points for each day that you ride Example: You live 5 miles from work and bike to and from work for total of 10 miles. Crossroads Public Meeting - Morgantown and Star City Comprehensive Plans

All: Good afternoon. The next Crossroads Public Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6 , 2012 at 6:00 PM at West Virginia University's Mountaineer Station at 1112 Van Voorhis Road. I have attached the announcement flyer that includes answers to frequently asked questions about the Crossroads project. This public meeting is titled "Community Choices" and will involve an assembly and small group work. The assembly will focus on the public input received so far and present a draft vision for the region. Participants will be asked to indicate their level of support for various aspects of the vision and specific policy choices that will affect the region. In the small groups, participants will focus on critical questions related specifically to either Morgantown or the Town of Star City. These small group discussions will help inform the comprehensive planning work for both communities. The Crossroads joint planning project can be followed at www.CrossroadsMon.com or at facebook.com/ Crossroads Mon. Successful participation hinges on getting the word out . Trail closure May 29-31

MUB TO CLOSE RAIL TRAIL MAY 29 TO 31 MORGANTOWN, W.Va., May 25, 2012— The Caperton Trail, from the Seneca Center to the Arboretum, will be closed Tuesday, May 29; Wednesday, May 30; and Thursday, May 31. The closure is necessary to allow the installation of culverts across the Caperton Trail in conjunction with the Morgantown Utility Board’s (MUB) remediation/stabilization of a land slide affecting a MUB Interceptor Sewer Pipeline near Sixth Street. No detour will be available during the three-day closure. MUB management appreciates the public’s patience.

Bicycle Friendly Community

Morgantown City Council, Traffic Commission and City Manager. Attached, please find the League of American Bicyclists' feedback on Morgantown's application for Bicycle Friendly Community recognition. As you know, the LAB has recognized Morgantown as a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community. While remarkable in itself, this recognition is also significant when one recognizes that Morgantown is the first and only bronze level BFC in WV while LAB had ranked WV 50th among bicycle friendly states. I'm happy to say that this year, LAB scored WV higher in bicycling education and encouragement increasing WV from 50th to 48th. I think Morgantown can take some credit for that. Attached is the LAB feedback on our application. Fortunately, the Greater Morgantown Bicycle Plan that you unanimously adopted already addresses much of the feedback. Now, the City's challenge is to implement the plan. We are due for renewal in February 2016. As many of you expressed at the May 1 City Council meeting, you want to go for Silver. To do so, or even to retain our Bronze status, we can't stand still. Also attached is the press release that announces our recognition. Frank D. Bike Friendly Fairmont

Good morning, I was skimming the League's review of Morgantown's BFC application and I was really feeling good about all the things that you've all accomplished in educating cyclists and motorists about sharing the road. At the same time, I was troubled by a phone call I got last nite from a Fairmont cyclist (she prefers not to use her name) last nite after she rode from her home on Fairmont Ave. to the MAC trail saying that she had been harassed by drivers and passengers shouting arrogant, agressive and sexist remarks. She has taken the Confident City Cyclist class, was riding vehicularly and was behaving safely in every way. She was in tears talking about how it felt, and rightly expressed that someone who is exercising their legal right to the road shouldn't have to put up with being treated badly. She was also rightly concerned for her safety, as this treatment is distracting and in one case occurred while she was crossing the 3rd St high bridge. I suggested that she do the following: Write a letter to the editor of the local paper (Times West-Virginian) or see if an article can be submitted Contact riders with the Fairmont Fliers and see if they would be interested in adding their experiences Contact Joe Sallmen, a regular Fairmont commuter to South Fairmont Is there anything we can offer to riders in Fairmont to help spread some of the driver and rider awareness we've created here? I appreciate any help and will pass it on. I really like this particular volunteer but nobody should have to put up with this kind of treatment - and this might be an opportunity to change attitudes city-wide. Especially during bike week.
