Frank, I would just move the word "fearlessly" to the end of the first sentence. Frank, Thanks for posting that article. I've ridden in all of the high-risk areas that were cited in the article, and never had an accident - but that didn't happen by accident. Successful crash avoidance is 99% planning ahead, and 1% reacting. As bike-friendly as Seattle is in there are many ways in which I feel much more comfortable riding in Morgantown. The most significant difference is the mood of drivers. Seattle drivers are mostly-overcaffeinated and spend ALOT of time in gridlocked traffic. You may find this hard to believe Morgantown area drivers are sweethearts by comparison. Mountain Bus drivers especially so. Seattle shares our geographic challenges like outdated, narrow, winding streets. However, in Seattle there are usually alternative routes to avoid them. I agree that sharrows are an excellent idea. I use them now, it would be nice to see the practice officially sanctioned. I also think the most profoundly effective way to increase biking is to start in grade schools, continue through high school (including driver awareness training in drivers' ed). Another really effective, fast-turnaround approach is the "hot spot" map. In about 1995 during a bike rally at the Seattle Center, Cascade Bike Club (CBCC) put up a map and had people stick numbers in places where they knew there were problems, and describe the problem in an adjacent log (like a charette). Although I wasn't hopeful about the results initially, within 3 years all 3 of my suggestions (along my daily commute route and my kids' way to school) were completed. That's enough blabbing from me I guess. Inspiration

Bike Board Members, Some of us think Seattle is a model of bicycle accommodation. The article from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/transportation/295186_bikewrecks08.html shows that they're struggling with the same problems we are. The article is entertaining as well as informational and even somewhat inspirational. Some of the approaches Seattle is taking to improve its cyclist situation are the same as ours, e.g. more signage and education for motorists as well as cyclists. The article points out the dangers of intersections between roadways and bicycle trails and bicycle lanes. I especially like the idea of "sharrows" coined in the article. It also has some good insights into both bicyclist and motorist psychology that gets us into trouble. I hope the article bolsters the enthusiasm and productivity of those of us who are working on transforming our goals into recommendations for the Traffic Commission. I think you'll also find it entertaining. Frank

I have a copy of the book on accepted standardized roadsigns in the US. There are on-line resources now, too. I agree, signage on roads will be a top priority of the Infrastructure group. We'll talk this over this week. Comments by people on the other sub-committees that will help us at our meeting are welcome. Outside of the city limits, and to a considerable extent inside those limits, the lack of shoulders (and the current law against using sidewalks) requires the “utilitarian” cyclist to use the road. However, I do note one aspect of the Plan that does attempt to facilitate roadway cycling: Item 44 (grouped with items 41-44 under “Other”) on “Table 1: Non-Motorized Alternatives Preliminary Cost Estimates” states “Install Share the Road signage throughout the county.”*albeit this action really belongs on the “Roadway” table instead (which gets back to the question of why did they ever separate the two to begin with). I believe that one of our initial desired “outcomes” to send to the Traffic Commission is the installation throughout the city of “Share the Road” signage. If the literature documents that the current prototype for this sign promotes motorist misconceptions (i.e., that cyclists should share the road with motorists), then we need to design (or find) an alternative prototype shown to promote the correct conception. My rationale for recommending this signage outcome: 1. It is integral to all 3 of our top priority areas (Education, Infrastructure, Commuting). 2. From an infrastructure standpoint, it is one of the least expensive and most quickly accomplished outcomes. 3. It will set the stage for the 2030 Plan to extend such signage throughout the county. 4. It is a “billboard” to the motorist that cyclist use of the road is legitimate; it may promote greater enforcement and lead to achieving additional regulations (e.g., 5’ minimum passing distance between motorist and cyclist). Please review these and how I currently manage our meetings and let me know what specific changes you would like me to make and why. If someone on the Bike Board is an expert in Robert's Rules, I also ask you to please step forward because I will need help as I am not an expert on them. One thing I would like to preserve is making decisions by consensus rather than voting because consensus engenders more support for decisions than voting. Frank

WVU Transporation and Parking Plan assumption documents

I am passing on what I received in my WVU e-news Friday, which provided notifcation that WVU has released a draft copy of their Transportation and Parking Plan Assumptions document: 1) WVU transportation, parking committee solicits feedback on planning document During the fall semester, a committee began work to develop a WVU transportation and parking plan. As a part of that effort, a Transportation and Parking Plan Assumptions document was developed to guide a more specific plan of action to be taken over the next five years. Poll responses go to a special database, not to the whole group, and can be given three different levels of privacy, and different types of formats. It's much more secure than a web based solution, and combined with the well know discussion capabilities of email lists, it's a winner.
